What’s That Smell?

What’s a secret skill or ability you have or wish you had?

Super sniffer. Nose that is smelling in the air.

Warning: some readers may find some of this very gross. If you do not like a gross sentence or two, then now is your opportunity to run away. Enjoy!

It was one moment I’ll never forget. Many years ago, when I used to attend church, I was there on a Wednesday evening. Service had just ended and everyone was socializing, be it in the hallways or sanctuary, kids being kids and thankful they no longer needed to sit still. This socializing usually lasted an hour or more, and eventually people slowly made it to the door and then to their cars to leave the holy house of god.

A few groups were always signed up to do weekly cleaning of the church interior, whether that be window cleaning or vacuuming floors, or disinfecting the bathrooms. It was my group’s turn to clean the church.

As people were huddled in the hallways, it was like a maze, trying to get through all the people just so I could travel to the other side of the church to the “oh so wonderful” janitorial closet to begin gathering my night’s cleaning supplies.

I walked past a group of people and something smelled “off”. It was neither the stench of farts or potent body odor. “Then what was it???” You may ask. It was a smell of sickness, like I’ve never smelled before. The sweet, pungent (seriously) smell of a full Kleenex tissue that has just been blown into (disgusting) and the scent of the snot is permeating the air so strong, I just had to get away – otherwise I might become infected!

I walked away as fast as I could and I was sure to clean and spray Lysol everywhere I could, whether that be on door handles or freely into the air. I did not end up getting sick, thank god.

Anyhow, I bet you’re wondering what my secret ability is. I can smell certain sicknesses and hormone changes (mainly those in women). I’m still not exactly sure what to call it, but it has proven useful to me several times through the years. I’ve most likely avoided getting sick because I was able to limit my contact with those who were.
