Hummingbirds

Did you know?

  1. Hummingbirds drink nectar, which is a necessary food source.
  2. They may visit roughly one thousand flowers a day to meet their dietary needs.
  3. Scientific study of hummingbirds in wind tunnels indicates that their flying speed can vary between 30 and 50 miles per hour.
  4. In the wild, some species of hummingbirds can fly up to 60 miles per hour.
  5. Hummingbirds have the highest metabolic rate per unit of body weight of all birds in the world. It takes an immense amount of energy to support their high level of activity.
  6. Many hummingbirds have good nocturnal vision and are active during the day, into dusk, and even before dawn.

Here are some pencil sketches (and the line-art that I drew of a couple of hummingbirds; they are of the White-Necked Jacobin and the Green Violet-Ear varieties.
