Are you superstitious?
Will anything happen if I pick up that penny? How about if I break that mirror? What about if that black cat crosses my path? Will anything bad happen on Friday the 13th?
These are all very common superstitions that people may believe in. I, however, do not find myself believing in the highly unlikely answers to these questions. I feel that people who are superstitious are trying to make sense of their world (or even just have a little fun, and there’s nothing wrong with that). Now, while making sense of your world can be a great thing, you need to do it in the right way. Have you ever heard of Occam’s razor? If you are presented with a problem or a question, and need to figure out the answer, the answer is going to be the most likely one; the most possible thing that could happen. It can be applied to the superstitions at the beginning of this post:
Let’s start with “Will anything happen if I pick up that Penny?”
Right away, I see one answer, which is Yes. Now, there are a couple of sub-answers here, which are “I will have good luck (for however long)” or “I am now one cent richer.”
Think about which one is the most likely answer. You picked up the penny – what really makes you think that you will gain any super powers to be lucky for a certain amount of time (such as an even better fortune coming your way) all because you found a penny on the ground and decided to pick it up?
I don’t think I need to go into any more detail because I’d just be repeating myself. I am not a huge fan of when someone continues to explain things to me with analogies. I most likely already understood it the first time and if I don’t, then I’ll let the person I am talking to know.
