What makes you nervous?
I usually don’t sweat the small stuff.. however, I can come up with a couple of things that make me nervous and I’ll elaborate on one of them. The first one are situations that trigger negative feelings from my past. I’ve since learned that it’s okay to put myself first and enjoy things I want to do in order to better my own mental health. The next type if situation that makes me nervous are things relating to things that mostly happen at work. Here is an example:
When things are going smoothly and suddenly they are not, that can trigger a nervous feeling. That is why its always nice to have a co-worker or two around, as miserly loves company and so do I, especially when things go wrong. This ensures I’m not the only one to blame and someone else is there to suffer the mental anguish with me. I’ll give you a scenario…
At my workplace, we have a location in one of our buildings called a Lecture Hall. We have a device called an Encoder or Video Processing Unit. What this does is, it allows us to stream video and audio to our service of choice such as YouTube, Twitch, etc. A few years ago, when we were coming back to our buildings for in person work after COVID, we had a different director of our department. We were having our opening ceremony. We were instructed to have it streamed to our provider in order to allow everyone to have the opportunity to participate as our physical space capacity was limited. Now, a bunch of people were watching, and we could see the number of concurrent viewers going up every few minutes.. going smoothly!
All of a sudden, it appeared the stream had stopped receiving data from the encoder. This was bad. We had the URL of the stream already posted on our website that morning. We had to end the current stream, in order to restart it to try and see if the stream would begin receiving data again. This means the URL we provided to the webmaster was no longer valid.
The presenter was still talking, unaware and uninterrupted. My co-worker and I quickly managed to fumble our way to get the stream running again, and a new link sent out. As we watched, the issue happened AGAIN! We decided to let it be this time, and the stream went on as normal, no more issues. We learned that day that if the encoder stops sending data, to just leave it alone!
Ever since that day, we haven’t experienced another issue as such, because we learned that this can just happen sometimes and to let it be! We also learned about permalinks, which make the different video URLs a thing of the past.
